Abstract
This paper estimates the human capital level for each sub-area in the Greater Seoul Capital Area (SCA), and analyzes the trends in spatial distribution of human capital. The possibility of a spatial mismatch between jobs and human capital is also discussed using the estimates of commuting time for residents of each sub-area in SCA. The results show that the average human capital level in each sub-area of SCA has been converging to each other. However, the share of master’s or doctoral degree holders in population has been diverging among the sub-areas. The cities or counties with high population shares of masters or doctors in the initial year (2005) showed faster increase of such shares in the following years (20052015), implying a kind of residential segregation of graduate degree holders. Also, the correlation between human capital and commuting time shows that in Gyeounggi-do (outer Seoul) the residents of high human capital areas tend to spend more time in commuting, while in inner Seoul the residents of high human capital areas tend to have less commuting time. Areas with younger population show longer commuting time. It may be that the spatial mismatch between jobs and human capital in the SCA is becoming more serious, since the commuting time has been increasing for most sub-areas including the high human capital areas.
