Abstract
This paper analyzes the impact of imports from China on the increase in patents of Korean manufacturing firms for 2006-2015 using the Survey of Business Activities. As a result, the higher the proportion of imports from China, the higher the level of innovation of firms, and imports of intermediate goods more affects the increase than final goods. This result shows that imports from China intensifies competition among Korean firms, and firms innovates to escape from competition. Also, by utilizing the input-output table, we find an additional channel that imports from China helps firms reduce costs and innovate production processes. These results suggest that imports from China not only generate the escape-competition effect but also promote innovation through costs reduction
