Abstract
In this paper, we analyzed the impact of tariff measures on Korean industries and the economy under the background that could adversely affect the global economy due to the trade war between the U.S. and China. The export effect analysis found a significant negative (-) effect on exports to the U.S. if the Chinese unit price rises compared to the global unit price due to the increase in U.S. tariffs, but the effect of China's tariff reduction was insignificant for U.S. exports. The analysis using industry-specific tariff data showed that the $1 reduction in imports from Korea increased by 19 cents when the U.S. imposed the first tariff and 8 cents when the third tariff was imposed, and significant results were found in precision equipment, textiles and other industries. The $1 reduction in imports from Korea increased by 5 cents when China imposed the third and fourth tariffs, and significant results were found in all industries except for electrical equipment, furniture, and textiles/clothing industries, indicating that there is a trade conversion effect. Overall, Korea is negatively affected by the decline in exports due to trade damage caused by the imposition of tariffs between the two countries. In particular, it suggests that companies that are directly or indirectly affected by trade disputes between the two countries should invest in a longer-term perspective to preempt innovative technologies and be more competitive through new export product development and efforts to diversify export markets.
