서경식의 사유와 ‘방법으로서의 디아스포라’의 가능성

이 논문은 서경식의 삶과 사유의 진화과정과 연결시켜 서경식이 사용한 ‘디아스포라’라는 말의 의미를 동태적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 서경식이 이 용어를 사용하기 시작한 것은 대체로 2000년대 중반 무렵부터인데, 이는 기존의 국민주의․국민 중심의 국민국가가 사실은 난민 혹은 비국민과의 관계 속에서 구성․발전해왔다는 것을 적극적으로 가시화시킴으로써, 철옹성 같은 국민주의․식민주의에 균열을 내려는 시도였다. 다만 주의해야 할 것은 서경식은 디아스포라를 역사적 실체가 아니라 일종의 관점으로 본다는 점이다. 필자의 말로 표현하자면, ‘방법으로서의 디아스포라‘이다. 이 관점에 서서 펼쳐지는 서경식 디아스포라론에는 다음과 같은 특징이 보인다. 첫째로 그 진화․심화가 보편성의 농밀화로 향하고 있다는 점이다. 물론 이 방향이 서구적 보편성으로의 기울기가 아닐 뿐만 아니라, 서구적 근대화의 대극에 아시아 등의 대안적 세계를 대치시켜, 이 대안을 통해 세계를 전복시켜려 하는 것 또한 아니라는 점에 주의해야 한다. 즉 디아스포라는 그 자체로 국민국가․국민주의를 대신하는 새로운 ‘공동체’의 모델이 아니라, 국민국가의 발전 과정에서 은폐되어 왔던 숨어 있는 또 하나의 현실을 드러내기 위한 문제의식, 혹은 좌표축에 가깝다고 볼 수 있다. 그의 글에 ‘아시아’가 거의 등장하지 않는 까닭도 여기에 있다. 즉 아시아의 부재가 서경식 디아스포라론의 또 하나의 특징인 셈이다. 세 번째는 디아스포라와 ‘계급’의 문제이다. 서구의 유대인 문제에서 나타나는 것처럼, 디아스포라라는 개념은 계급의 관점으로는 가시화되지 않는 비국민, 국외자 등의 존재들을 가시화시키는 관점이다. 네 번째로는 그의 저작에는 재일조선인을 비롯한 식민지 피해자, 홀로코스트 유대인 생존․피해자, 팔레스타인 난민 등이 동시에 등장하는 경우가 많은데, 사실 이 3자를 동일한 문제의식으로 논하는 경우는 거의 찾아보기 힘들다. 제국주의 침략의 희생자와 전체주의 피해자를 다른 질의 문제로 생각해왔기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 이들 3자를 나란히 올려놓고 자신의 생각을 펼치고 있다는 점에서 서경식은 독보적이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to dynamically analyze the meaning of the word “diaspora” by linking it to the evolution of Kyungsik So’s life and thought. As a result, the following points are identified So began to use the term in the mid-2000s in an attempt to break with ironclad nationalism and colonialism by actively making visible that the existing nationalist-centered nation-state was actually constructed and developed in relation to refugees or non-nationals. However, diaspora is not a historical entity, but a perspective, or “diaspora as method”. From this perspective, So’s diaspora theory has the following characteristics. First, its development and deepening is directed toward the concentration of universality. Of course, this direction is not a tilt toward Western universality, nor does it seek to overthrow the world by substituting an alternative world, such as Asia, for the great drama of Western modernization. In other words, the concept of diaspora is not a model of a new community that replaces the nation-state and nationalism, but rather a problem or a coordinate axis for revealing another hidden reality that has been concealed in the development of the nation-state. This is why “Asia” rarely appears in his writings. In other words, the absence of Asia is another characteristic of So’s diaspora theory. The third is the question of diaspora theory and ‘class’. The concept of diaspora is a perspective that makes visible the non-nationals, expatriates, and others who are invisible through the lens of class, as seen in the Jewish question in the West. Fourth, his writings often include victims of colonization, such as Koreans in Japan(Zainichi- Chousen-Jin), Jewish survivors and victims of the Holocaust, and Palestinian refugees, although it is rare to find these three groups discussed in the same problematic way. This is because victims of imperialist aggression and victims of totalitarianism are thought of as different issues. In this sense, So’s diaspora theory is unique in that he puts these three side-by-side and lays out his ideas.
