Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of yoga-training on autonomic nerve activity in middle-aged men with borderline hypertension. This research was carried out to compare the changes of autonomic nerve between the borderline hypertension and control group through yoga-training. We measured the autonomic nerve activity in pre- and post- yoga-training by ‘Ortho test’ using ‘Nerve Express 2.2. The subjects were six middle-aged men with borderline hypertension who were novice yoga trainees. The results were as follows. 1. The changes of low frequency/high frequency ratio, representing the tension level of sympathetic nerve, were different in pre- and post- yoga-training. In the yoga group, a significant decrease was found (p<.001), and in the control group, no changes were found in pre- and post- yoga-training in supine and upright positions. 2. The changes of HF, representing the tension level of parasympathetic nervous system, were different in pre- and post- yoga-training. In the yoga group, after the training, supine position (p<.001) and upright position (p<.01) increased significantly. In the control group, no changes were found in both the supine and upright positions. In conclusion, yoga-training is a good aerobic exercise for middle-aged men with borderline hypertension, because it increases the function of the heart and contributes to preventing cardiovascular diseases.
