초록
In the face of the geopolitical expansion of Western power and neighboring East Asian empires such as China (the Qing dynasty, 1644-1912) and Japan (the Meiji government, 1868-1912) into the Korean peninsula (the Choson dynasty, 1392-1910) at the turn of the 20th century, Korean reformists began to bring to the fore the term ‘munmyong (civilization) kaehwa (Enlightenment)’ as a universalist claim to Western civilization. The idea of munmyong kaehwa, as Andre Schmid puts it: spurred a reform package that sought to strengthen and enrich the [Korean] nation by disciplining the population into certain modes of behavior and bringing both individuals and the nation in line with international standards...Nationalism in these years resorted a form of globalization as a way of salvaging the nation, a project informed by the temporal and spatial vision of munmyong kaehwa. (Schmid 2002: 24)
