이소크라테스의 교육의 목표는 그의 『소피스트 반박 연설』에서 다음과 같이 표현되었다. “이 철학이 지시하는 것들을 따르고 싶어 하는 사람들은 ‘레토레이아’보다는 ‘에피에이케이아’에서 도움을 훨씬 더 빨리 받을 수 있을 것입니다.(21) 여기에서 그의 철학과 교육의 목표로 강조되고 있는 것은 에피에이케이아이다. 그러나 에피에이케이아는 무엇을 뜻하는가? 이 물음에 답하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 이소크라테스의 『시민대축전에 부쳐』에서는 에피에이케이아가 은혜와 감사를 의미하는 ‘카리스’와 함께 다음과 같이 언급된다. “(우리가 보여준) 카리스와 에피에이케이아를 일단 제쳐 두고 주제로 다시 돌아가서 가장 중요하고 정확한 말을 해야 한다면...”(63) 이에 앞서, 이 연설의 23-62에서 이소크라테스는 아테네가 다른 그리스 도시와 그리스 사람들을 위해 실천했던 카리스와 에피에이케이아의 사례들을 열거한다. 이로부터 에피에이케이아는 특별히 약자들을 향한 관대함을 의미한다는 것이 분명하다. 이 정의는 에피에이케이아의 전통적인 세 가지 의미, 즉 관대함, 합리성, 그리고 공정함의 의미 가운데 관대함을 부각시킨다. 실제로 아리스토텔레스는 『니코마코스 윤리학』에서 에피에이케이아를 성문법에 의해 엄격하게 내려진 판결이 결함이 있을 때, 법적인 정의를 바로잡고 완성시키는 정의의 한 종료로 정의하는데, 이소크라테스의 『시민대축전에 부쳐』는 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』에서 비교적 약한 관대함의 의미에 주로 초점을 맞췄던 것이다.
Abstract
Isocrates’ purpose of education is expressed in his Against the Sophists as follows: “Those who desire to follow the true percepts of this philosophia may, if they will, be helped more speedily towards epieikeia than towards rhētoreia” (21). What is herein underlined as the purpose of his philosophy and of his education is epieikeia. However, what does epieikeia mean? That is the question to which this article aims to answer. In Isocrates’ “Panegyricus,” epieikeia is mentioned with kharis, which means grace and gratitude as follows: “Now, if we may return to the main point, leaving aside issues of kharitas and epieikeias, and make the most precise argument...” (63). In the parts of this speech 23–62, Isocrates enumerates the examples of kharitas and epieikeias that Athens accomplished for the other Greek cities and people. From this, it is clear that epieikeia means in particular clemency toward the weak. This definition highlights one of the three traditional meanings of epieikeia, that is to say, clemency, reasonableness, and equity. In fact, Aristotle defines epieikeia in “Nicomachean Ethics” as a sort of justice that corrects and completes legal justice when a judgement strictly passed by a written law is defective. Yet, Isocrates’ “Panegyricus” mainly focused on the meaning of clemency that is comparatively weak in Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics.”
