『장자』의 치언, 우언, 중언에 대한 고찰- 「내편」을 중심으로 -

본고에서는 『장자』가 도를 서술한 방식을 『장자』 「우언」편에 제시된 우언(寓言), 중언(重言), 치언(巵言)을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 장자의 핵심사상은 제물론(齊物論)으로 분별과 대립을 초월하여 만물이 자연과 조화되는 ‘物化’의 도를 말한다. 『장자』는 이러한 물화의 도를 치언, 우언, 중언의 방식으로 밝혔는데, 「우언」편에 제시된 의미 분석을 통해 치언은 시비 분별이 없는 무심의 말로 도의 경지에서 나오며, 깨달음을 얻은 장자가 하는 말 자체를 치언으로 볼 수 있다. 우언과 중언은 치언의 실현방식으로 치언을 퍼트리고 믿게 하는 작용을 한다. 우언은 본뜻을 다른 사물에 가탁하여 교훈을 주거나 풍자하는 말로, 『장자』에서 곤붕의 이야기, 나비의 꿈, 조삼모사, 여희의 후회 등의 다양한 우언을 통해 분별없는 절대초월의 도를 구현하였다. 또 중언은 덕망 있는 선각자에 의탁하여 신뢰를 주는 말로, 『장자』에서는 역사적 성인과 현인들을 이끌어와 대화의 형식으로 도를 논의하였다. 우언과 중언 자체도 말을 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 수사방식이지만 『장자』에서는 우언과 중언 속에 다시 다양한 수사법을 활용하여 심오한 도의 세계를 표현하였다.
Abstract
In this paper, the method of describing the Tao in 『Chuang-tzu』 is studied through a focus on the concepts of Yuyan (寓言), Zhongyan (重言), and Zhiyan (巵言). Chuang-tzu's core ideological focus is the doctrine of rites (齊物論), which transcends discrimination and opposition, and refers to the way of 'things' in which all things are in harmony with nature. 『Chuang-tzu』 revealed the mode of reification in the method of Zhiyan, Yuyan, and Zhongyan. An analysis of the 「Yuyan」 section shows that both Zhiyan and Zhongyan emerge from the realm of the Tao. The concept of Zhiyan itself can be viewed as an apology. Both Yuyan and Zhongyan act as a way of realizing and spreading chivalry, and making people believe in it. Yuyan denotes something that gives a lesson or satirizes the original meaning of something else. In 『Chuang-tzu』, the Tao of absolute transcendence is realized in various ways such as the story of 鯤鵬, the dream of a butterfly, 朝三暮四, and the regret of Yeo-hee. In addition, Zhongyan denotes ideas that instill trust in virtuous pioneers, and in 『Chuang-tzu』, historical and other sages discuss the Tao in the form of dialogue. Although the use of Rhetoric itself is a method of effectively conveying meaning, in 『Chuang-tzu』, various rhetorical methods are used to express the profound world of Tao.
