남유 관점에서 본 정치권 막말 - 문화적 환경과의 부조화를 중심으로 -

이 연구는, ‘남유(catachresis)’에 관한 이론적 논의를 바탕으로, 정치 발언이 막말로 지각되는 양상을 탐구한다. 분석결과, 대학생 수용자 220명이 막말로 인지한 정치 발언들은 △남용된 은유, △오용된 일반어, △오용된 통속어, △비속어 형식으로 나타난다. ‘격이 낮은 통속어·비속어만 없으면 막말이 아니다’라는 일부 고정관념과 달리, 정치권 막말의 대부분은 은유 혹은 일반어였다. 특히, ‘너무 나간 은유’는 막말 문제의 중심이었다. 정치인들은 ‘막말로 들리는 은유’와 ‘정상적 은유’ 사이의 경계를 자주 식별하지 못했다. 인식된 막말들은 내용상으로 △집단 비하(예: 광주는 제사에 매달리는 도시), △개인 모욕(예: 내곡동 땅 거짓말하는 후보, 쓰레기 아닙니까?), △규범 훼손(예: 소유가 늘면 행복해지죠. 아내도 한 명보다 두 명이 낫죠?), △사회언어적 맥락 이탈(예: 1980년 휴교하고 이랬던 무슨 사태)로 설명된다. 대학생들은 특정 정치 발언을 막말로 지각할 때 실망, 혐오, 분노, 냉소 순으로 부정적 감정을 경험했다. 이 연구는 “정치 발언이 ‘기본적 가치, 규범, 사회언어적 맥락 등 문화적 환경’과 부조화하면 수용자가 어색함과 반감을 느껴 막말로 인식한다”라는 점을 제시한다. 분석결과에 따르면, 정치 발언 내 일부 내용이 문화적 환경에 부합하지 않더라도 발언 전체는 막말로 인식될 수 있다. 수용자는 막말의 부자연스러움을 각성하고 가치·규범 일탈의 경중에 따라 반감의 강도를 형성한다. 이러한 인식과 감정의 융합을 통해 막말에 대한 부정적 반응이 조합된다.
Abstract
The present study explores the cognitive process through which audiences perceive political remark as catachretic. The results show that South Korean politicians’ remarks which were recognized by 220 Korean college students as catachreses can be categorized as abusive metaphors, instances of misused common language, and slang. The study finds that politicians often fail to discern the boundary between abusive and normal metaphors. The substance of politicians’ catachreses in turn fall into one of four categories:·Disrespect for a group or region (e.g. Busan, the second-largest city in South Korea, has “stage-three cancer”)·Insults against an individual (e.g. the Seoul mayoral candidate who lies about his wife’s real estate is “no better than trash”)·Violation of norms (e.g. “The more you own, the happier you are”; “It is better for a man to have two wives than to have one”)·Departure from sociolinguistic context (e.g. -to a retail member of staff- “You’re probably enjoying lots of free time in this store. Because of the pandemic, there are few customers here”). The present study suggests that political remarks can be perceived as abusive or linguistically inaccurate when they are at odds with a cultural environment in terms of the prevailing fundamental values, norms, and sociolinguistic context. The college students who participated in the study, who regarded certain political remarks as catachreses, also tended to have negative feelings about these remarks, such as disappointment, disgust, anger, and cynicism.
