고백의 수사학으로 본 '소설 쓰기' - 이청준의 소설 「병신과 머저리」를 중심으로

Abstract

The study started from the premise that they imply their private and secretive confessions, consciously or unconsciously, when authors write a novel. In this regard, this paper aims to examine the rhetorical trait of confession implicated in ‘writing a novel’ ― the claims of Ethos and Pathos. First, Yi Cheong-jun’s novel, Byeongsingwameojeory, or The Wounded, delving into what a novel is, is taken as an analysis text. The purpose of this study is to examine the resonance relationship between ‘writing a novel’ and ‘confession’ by considering the function of confession implied in ‘writing a novel’ of the characters. Second, the feature of ‘writing a novel’ for confession is that the confessor calls himself a whistleblower. It means that the task can be accomplished only when one re-experiences the pain by revealing their wrongdoings in the past. The rhetoric of Ethos is to restore the trust in oneself which has been tarnished by concealment and deception. Third, confession is effective to soothe one’s painful emotions while incorporating emotions into a part of thinking and then linking the emotions and thinking. Ethos has a strong trait to promote Pathos to each other. The equilibrium acquired by revealing hurtful feelings is the rhetoric of Pathos. The Wounded is a novel that stands out for its excellent imagination and inquiring minds. The significance of this paper is that it is an attempt to discover a text that could have a close insight into Yi Cheong-jun's writer's spirit, and to identify ‘writing a novel’ as a device of ‘confession.’
