Abstract
This study analyzes Bernard-Marie Koltès' Black Battles With Dogs from the perspective of rhetorical argumentation, and on the basis of the theory of double enunciation, unique to theatrical discourse. Through these two approaches, we try to shed light on how scenes of confrontation and conflict are represented in Koltès' play and what they mean. First, the debates between the main characters Alboury and Horn are analyzed at the level of rhetorical argumentation to reveal the logical flaws, hypocrisy, and inhumanity hidden in the words of Horn, who represents Western Europe. The study also analyzes patterns of intrascenic communication between the characters and extrascenic communication between the stage and the audience. In particular, it unveils the dramatic role and significance of the foreign languages that randomly appear in the play from the perspective of extrascenic communication. The introduction of foreign languages can be summed up as a situational irony that undermines the communication between the stage and the audience in order to prompt the latter to form a new perspective on social reality. Finally, by using as tools of analysis the rhetorical argumentation strategies of persuasion and refutation, as well as irony as a special mode of communication, this study aims to reveal the validity and effectiveness of rhetoric as a tool in the analysis of theatrical works, filled with the languages of confrontation, conflict, and persuasion.
