Abstract

This paper is based on the Western rhetorical theories of Aristotle and Cicero, employing the three modes of persuasion (Ethos, Logos, Pathos) and the three stages of textual preparation (Invention, Arrangement, Style) to conduct an in-depth analysis of the introduction of Hu Shi’s（胡适）lecture series *On Methods of Academic Inquiry*（治学方法） at National Taiwan University. This study explores how Hu Shi effectively utilized rhetorical techniques to make his speech highly persuasive and impactful, leading to the enduring influence of his methodological proposition, "Bold Hypothesis, Careful Verification" (大胆的假设, 小心的论证), which remains relevant in contemporary academic discourse. In his speech, Hu Shi skillfully incorporated rhetorical devices such as contrast（对比） and metaphor（隐喻）, aligning his expressions with the historical context and audience profile to enhance the sincerity and emotional appeal of his argument. Additionally, through meticulous structural organization and the use of precise and compelling evidence, he ensured a clear logical progression, reinforcing the coherence and rigor of his discourse. The analysis indicates that Hu Shi was not only a scholar of profound academic depth and methodological rigor but also a figure of strong intellectual responsibility toward the academic community and younger scholars. Despite his esteemed reputation, he maintained a humble attitude and engaged with his audience in an earnest yet humorous manner. In conclusion, this lecture not only successfully disseminated Hu Shi’s academic philosophy but also provided a valuable research paradigm and intellectual inspiration for future scholars.
