오늘날의 세계화된 학문 환경에서 대학 수준의 영어 교육은 단순한 의사소통을 넘어, 사고를 조형하고 문화를 이해하는 정교한 표현의 장(場)으로 자리 잡고 있다. 본 연구는 고급 영어 교육에서 수사학적 교육이 지닌 변혁적 힘을 조명하며, 전통적 교수법과 수사학의 정수를 융합한 교육이 언어 학습의 지평을 어떻게 확장하는지를 연구 수행 하였다. 2024년도 15주간 106명의 대학 1학년 학생들을 두 개의 집단으로 나누었다. 기존의 교육 방식을 답습한 53명의 통제 집단과, 보다 세밀한 수사학적 컨텐츠의 교육 자료를 함께 학습한 53명의 실험 집단을 두고 본 연구를 수행 하였다. 두 집단 모두 영어의 기초를 다졌으나, 실험집단은 수사학적 텍스트인 감동을 불러일으키는 연설, 시대를 초월하는 문학 작품, 현대의 광고, 사고를 자극하는 영화등 다양한 텍스트를 분석하며, 언어가 단순한 소통 수단이 아닌, 설득과 감화의 도구임을 학습하게 되었다. 특히, 이들은 고전 수사학의 3대 요소인 에토스(ethos), 파토스(pathos), 로고스(logos)를 면밀히 분석하고 이를 직접 적용하는 과정을 거쳤다. 글쓰기 수행 능력을 내용, 구성, 문법, 어휘, 정확성의 측면에서 정밀하게 평가한 결과, 수사학 집단의 언어적 성장은 두드러짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 이들은 내용(p<.001), 구성(p=.001), 문법(p<.001), 어휘(p=.008)에서 통계적으로 유의미한 향상을 보였는데 정확성 부분에서는 두 집단 간 큰 차이를 보이지는 않았다. 이 연구를 통해 수사학 컨텐츠들을 언어 학습에 접목하는 것은 단순히 문법적 정확성을 높이는 데 그치지 않고 언어를 통해 사고를 확장하고, 문화적 함의를 깊이 이해하며, 설득의 기술을 익히는 과정을 학습 할 수 있다는데 의의가 있다고 볼수 있다. 본 연구는 고급 영어 교육이 나아가야 할 방향을 밝히며, 언어가 가진 본질적 힘—사람을 움직이고 세상을 변화시키는 힘—을 재조명해 보는 것에 의의를 두었다.
Abstract
In today's globalized academic landscape, university-level English education transcends mere communication skills, aspiring to cultivate sophisticated, culturally nuanced expression. This study illuminates the transformative potential of rhetorical instruction in advanced English language education, weaving traditional pedagogical approaches with the rich tapestry of rhetorical elements. Over a fifteen-week semester in 2024, we embarked on an educational journey with 106 first-year university students, divided into two pathways: a control group of 53 students following conventional instruction and a rhetoric group of 53 students exploring a more nuanced curriculum. While both groups engaged with fundamental English instruction, the rhetoric group delved deeper into various materials—from compelling speeches and timeless literary works to contemporary advertisements and thought-provoking films. Their learning experience was enriched through careful analysis and application of classical rhetorical devices: ethos, pathos, and logos. Through meticulous statistical analysis of writing performance across content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics, we discovered a remarkable flowering of linguistic ability in the rhetoric group. They achieved significantly higher scores in content (p<.001), organization (p=.001), grammar (p<.001), and vocabulary (p=.008), though mechanical proficiency remained comparable between groups. This study reveals that integrating rhetorical instruction into language education enhances technical proficiency and cultivates a deeper understanding of cultural nuances and persuasive communication. These findings illuminate a path forward for advanced English education, suggesting that rhetorical instruction serves as a bridge between basic linguistic competence and sophisticated cultural fluency.
