초록
This paper aims to investigate resources of attitudinal meaning in editorials of an English news magazine and their Korean translations, and analyzed those resources on the basis of Appraisal Theory. The purpose of this paper is to apply Appraisal Theory to identifying and comparing resources of attitudinal meaning in English-Korean news media translation. This paper will explore how resources of attitudinal meaning in the source texts which have relevance for translation are realized in the target texts, if shifts are found, how those resources of attitudinal meaning are shifted in the process of translation, and what possibly causes shifts in translation of resources of attitudinal meaning. The data analysis of the paper will show the shifts of attitudinal meaning in translation through omission, addition and modulation affect the objectivity and subjectivity of the target texts. The paper concludes by suggesting a number of reasons such as universal features of translation, stylistic differences between English and Korean and the translator’s perspectives and ideologies that differ from the ST writers’.
