초록
The purpose of this study is to examine how Jacobean marriage and sexual trades are represented in Thomas Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside. A Chaste Maid in Cheapside has been often evaluated as one of the representative city comedies which vividly show typical characteristics of Jacobean city comedies. This research is to study both the desire for the social class changes and the trade aspects of social conflicts, which are reflected in the play. Jacobean marriage often became the passage to heighten social classes, and A Chaste Maid in Cheapside is a good example to see how the City Comedy dealt with the social class conflicts as well as the materialist interests in marriage between generations of the era. However, under comic plots of the play, some serious subjects on the Jacobean cultural discourses of marriage and class struggles are deeply concealed. This paper is to study how the cultural discourses and class struggles are dramatically represented in the play, considering historical and cultual environments of the era.
Abstract

Jacobean marriage often became the passage to heighten social classes, and A Chaste Maid in Cheapside is a good example to see how the City Comedy dealt with the social class conflicts as well as the materialist interests in marriage between generations of the era. However, under comic plots of the play, some serious subjects on the Jacobean cultural discourses of marriage and class struggles are deeply concealed.
