This paper explores VP-ellipsis and Focus phenomena in English. Contra Johnson (2001) and others, this paper shows that VP-ellipsis and VP-topicalization are not the same operation and VP-ellipsis is derived from an independent operation to rescue the otherwise crashed derivation at the C-I interface as a repair strategy. Following the notion of Focus Domain put forward by Lee (2004), this paper argues that VP containing [+Top] adopts one of the following two strategies: clause-internal topicalization or VP-ellipsis triggered by [+E] of Top.
