초록
This paper notes that Korean has two types of constructions which in different respects correspond to the gapping construction in English; then, it argues the two types of constructions can be given a unified account by a variant of VP ellipsis analysis involving focus movement followed by deletion under identity. It is claimed that the proposed analysis not only accounts for the patterns that cannot be easily accounted for by the ATB movement analysis, but it also circumvents the problems of the focus movement analysis. It is also shown that two potential problems for the proposed analysis involving the reciprocal pronoun selo ‘each other’ and an NPI like amwukes-to ‘anything-also’ are not really problems as their behaviors can be accounted for on independent grounds.
