Abstract

The main purpose of this essay is to espouse the significance of ‘vijñapti-mātra’ (唯識無境) of the Viṃśatikā as a cognitive closure from the perspective of cognitive science, in light of Maturana’s critical analysis of the dualist view hidden in Sperry’s frog experiment. To do this, I examine the first objection in Viṃśatikā and show that it shares the same sort of the dualism involved in Sperry’s study. Drawing on Maturana’s account of this dualism, I present the assertion of “the triple world is mind only” (三界唯心), Vasubandhu’s account of four things (四事), and the implications of taimira (muscae volitantes). I argue that vijñapti-mātra is a term that complies with the way in which this cognition itself arises, having the appearance of objects similarly as if they were external independent of the cognitive function. The word ‘mātra’ is stated to rule out the external objects (arthapratiṣedhārtham) only, but clarifies that cognition corresponds to the psychological concomitants (caittas). All existence entails this cognition in the use of language, as a basic psychological and biological function formed by the recurrent experiences of the members through their socio-cultural history. Vasubandhu’s explanation for the objection-restriction can be summed up as follows: ① Restriction as to time and place can be enacted by comparing differences between situations, not by external objects. ② In regard to the nonrestriction to personal mind continuum; there is a personal mind continuum identifying the river of pus for the man who carries karma of hungry ghost, and the fruition of actions of psychologically shared karma along with historical and cultural recurrence of experience appears to the eyes. ③ Causal efficacy itself is not distinguishable between perception and hallucination, since causal efficacy may arise even without the external objects. The analogy of taimira implies that one hardly realizes the way cognition of the object must include an explanation of it.
