『유식이십론』과 유식성 개념의 변화_『섭대승론』과『유식이십론』을 중심으로_

본고에서는 『유식이십론』의 키워드인 유식성을 역사적 관점에서 조망한다. 인도철학사에 『유식이십론』이 끼친 기여는 흔히 생각하는 것처럼 정교한 논변을 제공하여 본격적인 토론의 장을 열었다는 점에 한정될 수 없다. 이에 더해 유식성의 개념 자체에 변화를 주고 있다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이점은 특히 제11송부터 제15송까지의 내용에서 잘 드러난다. 여기서 바수반두는 극미 개념의 이율배반성에 기반해 물질 자체가 성립할 수 없음을 적극적으로 논변한다. 해당 논변의 성패와 별도로, 물질의 개념 자체를 허물어 버리려는 이 시도는 바수반두 이전 유식성 논의에서는 전혀 보이지 않던 요소라고 할 수 있다. 이 역사적 변화를 포착하기 위해 『섭대승론』과 『유식이십론』의 유식성 논증의 공통점과 차이점을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 양자는 많은 각도에서 비교가 가능하나 특히 물질의 정체에 대한 첨예한 입장의 차이를 보인다. 이로써 바수반두의 유식성 이해에 기존에는 보이지 않던 급진적인 물질성 비판이라는, 버클리의 비물질주의(immaterialism)에 상당하는, 새로운 차원이 추가되고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
In this paper, I closely look at the central notion of vijñaptimātratā from a historical perspective. Common understanding holds that Viṁśikā opened a full-fledged debate with philosophical rivals by offering elaborate arguments. However, it has been overlooked that Viṁśikā made a remarkable difference in the very idea of vijñaptimātratā itself. From Verse 11 to Verse 15 in Viṁśikā with its own commentary, Vasubandhu aggressively argues that corporeality is never possible due to the antinomies of the very idea of atoms. Successful or not, this kind of metaphysical attempt to deny the very notion of materiality is never found even in the discourses of Yogācāra-Vijñānavādins before Vasubandhu. To capture this conceptual change, I sketch out a conceptual history of vijñaptimātratā by contrasting Viṁśikā to *Mahāyānasaṁgraha that precedes it. Comparing the vijñaptimātratā proofs found in both texts, we can easily notice that Viṁśikā has inherited many points from the vijñaptimātratā proofs or illustrations presented in the 2nd chapter of *Mahāyānasaṁgraha. It repeats with little modifications the metaphor of dreaming and waking, the citation of the famous passage “O sons of the Conqueror, what belongs to the triple world is mind-only.” in Daśabhūmika-sūtra, the example of those with vitreous floaters, and the so-called collective hallucination of hungry ghosts. Meanwhile, Viṁśikā shows radical departures from the common practice of presenting vijñaptimātratā. It never alludes to Saṁdhinirmocana-sūtra, which was quite authoritative and therefore quoted lengthily in *Mahāyānasaṁgraha. Furthermore, Viṁśikā tries to introduce new approaches, among which the critique of materiality is the most important. It is not just for its logical nature and argumentative power but also for its conceptual change in the notion of vijñaptimātratā itself. In short, Vasubandhu was the first to embed the radical refusal of materiality, an essential factor in Berkeleian immaterialism, in the very idea of vijñaptimātratā.
