This study aims to compare and contrast the polite expressions in Korean and English in order to teach Korean to beginner Korean learners. To achieve the study’s target, previous studies were researched. From the perspective of comparative linguistics, this study examines concepts and types of polite expressions in Korean and English. Furthermore, this study looks into how to teach and learn polite expressions efficiently to elementary learners. Because Korean has a complex politeness system, a teaching method that compares politeness in Korean and English is needed to investigated. This study suggests that it is beneficial for Korean learners of English to distinguish between the variations in politeness in both languages. Lastly, in order to enhance communicative competence, sociolinguistic background is also needed to be examined in the field of teaching Korean.
