Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of three listening techniques—dictation, dictogloss, and shadowing—as well as the use of authentic materials, including English speeches, CNN news reports, TED-Ed lessons, and animated English-language films, in English listening instruction. The participants were 28 English education majors who took an English listening course in the fall semester of 2024. Based on observations of classroom activities and analyses of final assignments, the study yielded the following findings: (1) the use of dictation, dictogloss, and shadowing techniques promoted active and positive participation among students; (2) incorporating authentic materials from diverse media sources increased students’ engagement and interest; (3) students working in groups during dictogloss activities demonstrated higher achievement compared to those working individually; and (4) many students expressed a willingness to continue using one or more of these listening strategies according to their learning goals and styles after the course ended. This case study offers practical insights for educators seeking dynamic and engaging approaches to teaching English listening skills.
