Abstract

Tim Crouch’s Truth’s a Dog Must To Kennel explores the porous boundaries between theatrical reality and virtual experience by introducing a VR headset ― a device that enables the performer to traverse between the visible and invisible worlds. Through the repeated act of wearing and removing the headset, accompanied by narratives describing what the performer ‘sees,’ the performance constructs and collapses multiple layers of theatrical reality, dismantling the logic that separates presence from absence, as well as reality from illusion. Drawing on Jacques Rancière’s notion of the redistribution of the sensible, this essay examines how Crouch’s performance destabilises the established order of perception and invites the spectator to reconstruct their own sensory and cognitive relations. The shifting interplay between seeing and hearing, distance and participation compels the audience to negotiate what counts as the ‘real.’ In doing so, Crouch’s play exposes the instability of the sensible order and demands that the spectator become an active agent in its continual reorganisation ― revealing contemporary performance as a site where new modes of perception and subjectivity can emerge.
