‘자비의 특별 희년’ 선포에 드러난 프란치스코 교황의 사목적 비전과 지향

프란치스코 교황의 사목적 비전과 행동들은 그의 짧은 교황직 수행기간에도 불구하고 교회의 삶과 세상에 깊은 영감과 영향을 주었다. ‘자비’라는 주제는 그의 교황직 수행에 있어서 핵심 용어다. 그는 자신의 숱한 강론과 연설에서 자비에 대해 언급했다. 자비의 희년을 선포함으로써 교황은 어쩌면 교회 쇄신에 대한 일종의 대담한 비전을 제시하고자 한 것 같다. 자비의 희년의 선포를 통해 교황은 교회가 자비로운 하느님께 눈을 돌려 교회 스스로가 하느님 자비의 징표가 되기를 원했다. 제2차 바티칸공의회에 직접 관여하지 않았던 첫 번째 교황인 프란치스코 교황에게 자비의 희년 선포는 제2차 바티칸공의회 정신으로의 복귀를 의미한다. 자비의 교회, 가난한 이들을 위한 교회라는 교회론은 사실 제2차 바티칸공의회 신학이다. 자비의 희년을 경축하고자 하는 프란치스코 교황의 결정은 제2차 바티칸공의회에 대한 창조적인 해석이다. 일상의 삶에서 자비를 살아내는 것은 복음을 새로운 방식으로 선포하는 것이다. 프란치스코 교황은 자비가 새복음화를 추동하는 영감과 자극의 원천이라고 믿는다. 따라서 “교회의 첫째 직무는 그리스도의 얼굴을 바라보며 모든 이를 하느님 자비의 위대한 신비로 이끌어 들이는 것이다”(「자비의 얼굴」, 25항). 이 논문은 자비의 희년 선포에 드러난 프란치스코 교황의 사목적 비전과 지향을 신학적인 관점에서, 교회 역사의 문맥 안에서, 사회·문화적 흐름 속에서, 프란치스코 교황의 개인적 소신이라는 측면에서 접근하고 탐구한다.
Abstract
Pope Francis’ pastoral visions and activities, during the short period of his pontipicate, have deeply inspired and influenced the life of the Church and the world. The topic of mercy has become the key word of Pope Francis’ pontificate, which he addresses over and over again in countless speeches. Proclaiming a Jubilee of Mercy is equivalent to suggesting a bold vision for renewing the institutions and sturctures of the Church. The reason why he has proclaimed a Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church is to turn our gaze to merciful Father “so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives”(Misericordie Vultus, 3). For Pope Francis, the first post-Vatican II pope who was not at Vatican II in any capacity, the proclamation of a Jubilee of Mercy is a signal of the return to the intent of Vatican II. A Church of mercy and for the poor is unquestionabley the theology of Vatican II in act. Francis’ decision to celebrate the Jubilee of Mercy is a creative act of interpretation of Vatican II. Furthermore, for Francis, living out in our daily lives mercy is to proclaim the Gospel in new way. Francis believes that mercy is the source of inspiration and motivation for the promotion of the new evangelization. Therefore, the Church’s “primary task is to introduce everyone to the great mystery of God’s mercy by contemplating the face of Christ”(Misericordie Vultus, 25). This paper will approach Pope Francis’ pastoral vision and orientation expressed in the proclamation of the Extraordinary Jubilee year of Mercy from the perspecives of theological background of his pontificate, the context of the Church history, the socio-cultural trends, and Francis’ private conviction.
