프란치스코 교황의 등장으로 로마 가톨릭교회에 새로운 바람이 불고 있다. 교황의 다양하고 파격적인 언행은 세상에 큰 화제가 되었다. 하지만 교황이 일으킨 바람이 현실 변화의 지속적인 동력으로 남을지 아니면 한때의 유행으로 그칠지는 아직 확실하지 않다. 전자가 현실이 되려면, 화제가 되었던 교황의 다양한 언행의 기원이 되는 그의 삶의 원리와 거기에 내포된 교회와 세상을 향한 그의 메시지, 특히 그의 교회 전망을 사람들이 제대로 읽어야 한다. 프란치스코 교황의 삶의 원리를 결정하는 핵심 요소는 결국 교황 자신이다. 우리가 현재 알고 있는 교황의 모습에 가장 큰 영향을 준 요소는 아마도 그가 자신의 삶의 한창 때를 보낸 예수회일 것이다. 여기서는 예수회원의 삶에 대한 ‘영신수련’의 비중과 중요성에 착안하여 프란치스코 교황이 누구인지를 먼저 살펴보기로 한다. 영신수련의 영향을 깊이 받은 교황이 일관되게 보여주는 삶의 원리는 ‘그리스도 중심성’이라 할 수 있다. 이 원리는 무엇보다도 ‘밖으로’ 향하는 교회를 우리에게 교회 전망으로 제시한다. 그리스도 중심의, 밖으로 나가는 교회만이 신자유주의, 무관심의 세계화, 영적 세속성이 지배하는 세상을 형제애가 넘치는 세상으로 변화시키는데 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
With the appearance of Pope Francis, a fresh wind is rising in the Roman Catholic Church. His diverse, unconventional words and deeds have created a worldwide sensation. However, it is not yet certain whether the wind the Pope has aroused will continue to be a fresh movement to change our realities or end up as just a one-time trend. For the former to be realized, the Pope’s life principle from which his words and deeds originate and his message to the church and the world, especially his vision of the church, which is contained in this principle, must be properly read and understood. At base, the core of Pope Francis’ life principle is the Pope himself. The greatest factor that has influenced the Pope as we currently know him is probably the Society of Jesus, where he spent the prime of his life. This article first examines who Pope Francis is by taking into consideration the significance and importance of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in the life of Jesuits. What the Pope shows us consistently is a life principle that may be called ‘Christ-centeredness.’ This principle first and foremost presents us with a vision of the church as a living entity with an outgoing drive. This kind of church alone can contribute to the transformation of the world today, in which neoliberalism, the globalization of indifference, and spiritual worldliness prevail, into a world brimming over with brotherhood.
