Abstract

The intent of this research is to approach from a scholarly point of view the topic of apocalyptic literature, which has been generally conceived as an illogical subject, and to affirm once again the literary flavor and theological objectivity of the given subject. This manuscript essentially focuses on the ‘beast symbolism’ that appears in chapter 7 of the book of Daniel, which the authors of the apocalyptic literatures employed to suggestively depict the historical and specific situation. The main context of this research can be summarized as follows: 1) Daniel 7’s quality and function over the context of the book of Daniel 2) Daniel 7’s apocalyptic characteristic based on the research history of the apocalyptic literatures 3) Exegetical examination on Daniel 7,1-8 4) Comparison study between the main subject and the ancient near eastern myths. Aforementioned research revealed that through the (literary) style, content, used language, connection with Daniel 2, etc, Daniel 7 func- tions as some kind of ‘editing link’ within the whole content of the book of Daniel. In addition, the ocean (representing chaos and evil) and the beasts (especially Leviatan, Rahab, and Dragon) that appear in the main text were revealed to be frequently appearing in other Bibles as well (in Job, Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc), and especially Daniel 7,1-8 were revealed to be influenced by Daniel 2 and 4, as well as Hosea 13,7-8. Moreover, because the strange features of the beasts resemble closely the figurines from the ancient near eastern arts, it could be deduced that the images were very common to the both authors and readers at that time. The four beasts from the main text symbolize the series of empires throughout the four kingdoms, i.e. Babylon, Media, Persia, and Greece. It was, however, the mythical moti- ve from the ancient near eastern region that influenced foremost the chapter 7 of Daniel. This research especially considered comparisons of Canaan mythology, Acadian mythology of Mesopotamia and Babylon mythology and found various reciprocal similarities. Especially Yamm of Canaan mythology, Tiamat of Babylon mythology, and the beasts from Daniel 7 had all in common that they were symbolized with the ‘ocean’ as a motive. Also Anzu from the Accadian mythology resem- bled the beasts from Daniel 7 from the fact that it clearly underlined both animal and human characters, and their destructive dispositions. It was also found, however, that the author of Daniel 7 did not reconst- ruct one’s work using only the elements from the other mythologies, and vivid difference was that no ‘battle’ scene was reported throughout the chapter. From this perspective, it then becomes clear that, although the author of Daniel 7 reconstructs one’s work by applying variety of mythical motives in order to enrich one’s apocalyptic-mythic imagina- tions, he/she did not follow simply the other mythical motives nor depreciate one’s work into a single parody. In this sense, Daniel 7 can be described as a chapter that ‘demytho- logizes’ any mythical representations into a real and concrete history. This is because, although it borrows publicly spread mythical langua- ges, Daniel 7 demythologically emphasizes the hope that emerges from faithfully withstanding the dark reality, from the historical and apocaly- ptic perspectives.
