Abstract

Gregory seeks to find a new understanding of the generative material world through the concept of diastema represented by time. For Gregory, diastema means, on the one hand, a temporal extension as the nature of the creature, and on the other hand, the ontological difference between the Creator and the creature. Diastema is a unilateral gap limited only in terms of creation because it is absent in the Creator with infinite nature and is inherent only in the nature of creation. Thus, the fundamental ontological difference or discontinuity between the Creator and the creature results in an epistemological incomprehensibility of the essence(ousia) of God. What we understand is never the actual nature of God or a part or aspect of God’s essence, but only the activity(energeia) of God. Nevertheless, for Gregory, the Christian knowledge of God(gnosis) is the foundation for further knowledge as the awareness of that knowledge deepens. God’s limitless or infinity is essentially an inexhaustible openness to a creature with a temporal nature. Therefore, the true knowledge of God results in and entails a change in human existence. A diastemic creature by nature has the potential to move toward the good by constantly moving. ‘Epektasis’, which means the leap or dynamism of the finite soul’s endless progress toward God, can be emerge as the limitless potential of eternal growth as a continual advance, because God always remains transcendent in human existence. Therefore, although the ‘continuous progress’(epectasis) places the beginning in the present diastema condition, it means that salvation is accomplished through the diastema of creation.
