본 논문의 4세기 카파도키아 교부 중 하나인 니사의 그레고리오스(Gregory of Nyssa)의 『인간의 창조』(De hominis opificio)에 나타난 기독교적 인간관의 특성을 연구한다. 니사의 그레고리오스는 다른 카파도키아 교부들에 비해서 철학적으로 가장 뛰어나다고 평가받는다. 그의 철학적 능력은 이 작품에서도 잘 드러나 있다. 이 저술은 기독교적 인간관을 대표적으로 표현하는 용어인 ‘하나님의 형상’(imago Dei)에 대한 해석이 주된 논의를 이루고 있다. 그의 논의는 단순히 성서에 대한 해설이 아니었다. 그는 당대 사용되던 플라톤 철학의 언어를 사용함으로써 기독교 사상의 보편화를 시도하였을 뿐만 아니라, 기독교 사상의 독특성을 고대철학과의 대화를 통하여 보여주었다. 본 논문은 하나님의 형상으로서의 인간은 우주에서 왕적 지위를 지닌 존재로 그려지고 있으며, 하나님의 형상과 모양은 상호 교호적으로 이해되고 있음을 기술한다. 이어서 중요한 철학적 문제인 몸과 영혼의 관계에 대한 그레고리우스의 인간 이해의 독특성을 보여준다. 그는 정신과 물질을 구분하는 이분법을 배격하고 영혼과 몸의 관계에서는 영혼이 더 존재론적으로 우위에 있기는 하지만, 이원론 철학과는 달리 몸에 큰 가치가 부여되고 영혼과 몸이 하나의 일체성을 이루고 있음을 보여준다. 이어 그레고리우스에게 인간의 본성은 타락하였음에도 하나님의 형상이기 때문에 여전히 첫 창조 시의 아름다움을 가진 존재임을 밝히고, 이런 본성은 인간이 신에게 참여하기 때문이므로 인간은 신적 덕성을 끝없이 모방하는 것이 자신의 사명임을 보여준다. 마지막으로 그레고리우스의 부활 사상을 다룬다. 여기서 그의 독특성은 부활은 창조, 타락, 낙원의 회복이라는 도식을 가진 거대한 기독교적 구원 서사 속에서 이해되고 있다는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper intends to study the features of the anthropology of Gregory of Nyssa, one of the Cappadocian Fathers in On the Making of Man (De hominis opificio). Gregory of Nyssa is usually regarded as surpassing the other Cappadocian Fathers in philosophical depth, which is also manifested in his philosophical and theological work, On the Making of Man. The main argument of this work is centered around the meaning of the image of God (imago Dei). The feature of his argument centers on his use of philosophical terms for Christian apology without appealing to the authority of the Scripture. This work tries to interlocute with Platonic philosophy among others, an influential philosophical stream in Gregory of Nyssa’s time, especially on the problem of creation, soulbody relation et cetera. One of the characteristics in his understanding of the image of God consists in his identifying the image of God with the likeness of God. Furthermore, against the idea of denigration of the human body, he puts a great value on the body, which is created by a good and beautiful God. For him, the mission of man as God’s image is to perpetually imitate divine virtue such as wisdom, righteousness, and freedom. Finally, the resurrection is understood by him in the context of God’s larger plan for human salvation and the recovery of lost paradise.
