Abstract
Gregory of Nyssa, while critically receiving Platonic dualistic ontology, attempts to synthesize Christian and Hellenistic culture. This paper tries to show that his reception of Platonic philosophy, especially his central conception of eros, is made in the context of his Christian view of creation and salvation. His Christian ontology is reflective of the typical Platonic distinction between the sensible and intelligible worlds. However, for him, the distinction between the sensible and intelligible worlds is embraced by the distinction between infinite God and finite creatures. Furthermore, the Christian idea of the Incarnation gives an affirmation of the material world, which Plato disdains, since the material world is marked by change and corruption. The conception of eros in Gregory of Nyssa’s Homilies on the Song of Songs manifests an affinity with the Platonic conception of eros, which means the incomplete human soul’s desire for the perfect idea of Beauty. However, it is clear that the Platonic conception of eros is fundamentally different from that of Gregory of Nyssa. While the Platonic notion of eros is unilateral in character, Gregory of Nyssa’s is reciprocal in that Christian eros means both God’s love for humanity and the human desire for God. Finally, Gregory of Nyssa’s interpretation of the Song of Songs is contextualized by the history of salvation, in which Incarnation occupies a central place.
