Abstract

This paper challenges the foundational concepts of existence upheld in traditional Western philosophy by asking whether existence can indeed be conceptualized. Following the trajectory of Heidegger's philosophy, which is propelled by this very question, the paper reads Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. By interpreting Oedipus' narrative as a way of existential survival immersed in the world, as Heidegger describes, we can understand how Oedipus ultimately leads a life rather than succumbing to death, even amid the seemingly horrific and tragic conditions of suffering. In chapter 2.1, this paper examines the nature of the various realms into which Oedipus is thrown: prophecy, the nurturer of power, and humanity. Chapter 2.2 then explores the nature of Oedipus' actions within each realm as he strives to navigate his existence, focusing on aspects such as spontaneity and the unknown. In chapter 3, this paper will analyze how the nature of these actions, clarified in section 2.2, is re-enacted in the two pivotal moments of revelation/discovery in Sophocles' drama. By interpreting Oedipus Rex through the framework of Heidegger's concepts of being-thrown and event, and comparing it with the realms of the story and plotted drama, this study aims to address the philosophical question of how a human being, immersed in a world that cannot be controlled, predicted, or understood, can lead themselves to a dimension of life rather than death. Through an examination of Oedipus Rex, this study will demonstrate that when thrownness as being-in-the-world is responded to in the context of "action," humans can not only transcend mere survival but also achieve ontological salvation (existential awareness) and create possibilities for solidarity with others.
