Abstract

The reasons why this study focuses on the space shown in Cha Bum-seok's Saemaul play are as follows. First, the Saemaul Movement started, spread, and developed around space, secondly, Saemaul plays were mainly created by paying attention to specific regions, thirdly, through local tours, and fourthly, Cha Bum- seok worked as a major writer and theater movement. By paying attention to the space shown in his Saemaul play, Cha Bum-seok's goal in Saemaul play will become clear. To this end, in Chapter 2, we will examine the image of the rural area as a space that interacts with the Saemaul Movement, focusing on <Ilsimgyo> and <Hwalhwasan>; in Chapter 3, we will examine the relationship between the rural area and the city, focusing on <Waija-ri> and <Azalea of Yaksan>; and in Chapter 4, we will examine the relationship between Cha Beom-seok and Saemaul plays, focusing on <Ssukgulre-tteok> and <The Adventure of Twins>. Saemaul plays and theater cannot be free from the frame of propaganda, but that does not mean that all the writers’ works perfectly practiced and accomplished this goal. Therefore, through the analysis process of this paper centered on space, we can examine, as Jeon Seong-hui mentioned, the process in which Cha Beom-seok not only praised the Saemaul Movement in his Saemaul plays, but also built his own playwriting world, and on the other hand, Cha Beom-seok’s perception of the Saemaul Movement at the time.
