Abstract

When Sophocles' Oedipus the King was first performed in Athens, the city was faced with a double calamity of war and plague. For his audience, the plague was neither a mythological event nor a literary symbol, but a real everyday disaster beyond human control that claimed the lives of a quarter of Athenian population at that time. This article attempts to reinterpret this classic as a record of and reflection on the experience of the plague and investigate its political and cultural implications from the retrospective view of our own pandemic era. To this end, this paper 1) examines how Sophocles’ tragedy overlaps with and differs from Oedipus mythology/story before him and Thucydides’s narrative in The History of Peloponnesian War 2) investigates the messages the playwright is trying to convey to his fellow audience through the character Oedipus he reinvented as a proto-type of New Man and 3) interrogates the overall impact of the plague on Athens' literary imagination and social insight. Oedipus is designated by the oracle as ‘poison’ that caused the plague in Thebes, but he is a paradoxical ‘medicine’ that saves the city through voluntary sacrifice of exile, thus becoming a new type of Pharmakos who breaks the vicious cycle of the revengeful rite of sacrifice. By taking mythology/history of the pandemic into the level of tragedy, Sophocles has opened a door to a new path where the Logos and Mythos meet, like the fateful crossroad Oedipus arrived at in the play.
