Abstract
Agitation and propaganda are major components in maintaining the North Korean social system. According to North Korea's dictionary definition, propaganda is “the process of spreading and informing widely by systematically explaining the leader’s revolution and ideology.” Agitation is “the work of arousing revolutionary spirit to carry out revolutionary tasks well.” Literary works, as a means of propaganda and agitation, are key tools of North Korean rule. They serve as a mechanism of ‘symbolic manipulation’ that continuously instills ideas, ideology, and devotion to the leader in the North Korean people, thereby inducing their voluntary and unconditional consent and participation. The purpose of this study is to examine the ‘resident mobilization discourse and agitation-propaganda strategies’ that appear in North Korean plays by analyzing plays published in Chosun Arts since the rise of the Kim Jong-un regime in 2012. This study focuses on ‘critical discourse analysis (CDA)’ as a research methodology for analyzing texts and ‘Miranda/Credenda’ as a method of propaganda. The analysis led to the following conclusions. First, North Korean plays during the Kim Jong-un era seek to propagate and agitate the need for the principle of self-strength and the role of intellectuals in leading it. Second, a specific method of propaganda is to appeal to both the rational and emotional dimensions of residents in order to induce their voluntary participation and dedication. It is hoped that this study will open new research horizons, as many previous studies on North Korean plays have been conducted without a clear theoretical framework.
