Abstract

This study aims to redefine the learner profile of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) from an ontological perspective by employing Jang Il-soon's life philosophy as a core analytical framework, comparing and connecting it with international sustainability discourses. Existing ESD research tends to be biased towards Western-centric competency-based approaches and techno-centric perspectives, often limiting humans to 'individuals who produce outcomes'. In contrast, Jang Il-soon's thought, proposing an ontological and ethical view of humanity centered on life, coexistence, holism, and self-cultivation, provides a profound philosophical foundation for the inner transformation required by ESD. This research utilized hermeneutic literature analysis, conceptual analysis, comparative philosophy and policy analysis, and an integration of transformative learning theory with East Asian self-cultivation principles. Through these multi-faceted methods, core concepts of Jang Il-soon's thought—gyeongmul (reverence for things), suyang (self-cultivation), yangcheon (nurturing Heaven/life), mosim (serving with reverence), and gongsaeng (coexistence)—were restructured into pedagogical categories of values, competencies, actions, and reflection. Furthermore, by analyzing international policy documents such as UNESCO ESD 2030, SDG 4.7, and OECD Education 2030, the limitations of existing discussions on the learner profile were critically reviewed. Consequently, a Korean-type ESD learner profile model featuring a three-tiered structure of "Being–Values & Ethics–Practice" was proposed. This research contributes to the development of ESD theory that reflects cultural diversity and the design of localized life education models by integrating the contemporary significance of Korean life philosophy into education for sustainable development.
