Abstract

Background Public art must address publicness, artistry, and sustainability. Several Korean projects (e.g., Honggeoun Uri Garak, Shoe Tree) were short-lived due to limited citizen resonance and weak maintenance. This study examines how citizen participation and installation–digital strategies relate to urban identity and social–institutional sustainability.. Methods We conducted literature review and case analysis, cross-comparing domestic cases (Jeong-dong Radio Road, Seoul Square/DDP/COEX, Seoul Light, Rain Veil, Shadow Archive) and international cases (Lyon murals, Another Place, Seed Cathedral, Beijing/Singapore media facades). Result Korean practice shows concentration in administration-led installation/digital types with insufficient institutionalized participation and maintenance, whereas international practice achieves longevity and identity reinforcement via co-governance and mixed types. Conclusion Policy alignment with city vision, institutionalized participation, standardized maintenance, and integrated installation–digital communication are decisive for sustainable public art that strengthens urban identity.
