Abstract

This paper is to examine the theological development of WCC based on the themes of the WCC Assembly meetings. The WCC Assembly themes are very much focused on the traditional frame of theology of Trinity. The Amsterdam Assembly used God in its theme. From the 2nd Evanston (1954) to the 6th Vancouver (1983) the WCC Assembly used Christology. Only exception was the 4th Uppsala (1968) which used eschatology. Since 1991 the theology in the WCC themes has been changed into Pneumatology and Trinity. The 7th Canberra (1991) developed theology of life based on Pneumatology. The 8th Harare (1998), the 9th Porto Alegre (2006), and the 10th Busan (2013) adopted trinity in their themes. Pneumatology and Trinity were very useful to deal with the issues of spirituality, environment, religious diversity that the contemporary faced with. The ecclesiology in WCC was developed from theory of comparative unity to that of visible unity. The 3th New Delhi (1961) emphasized an “organic unity.” The 4th Uppsala connected church unity with unity of humankind. The 5th Nairobi (1975) suggested “a conciliar fellowship.” The 6th Vancouver argued a “visible eucharistic fellowship.” And the 7th Canberra and the 8th Harare dealt with Koinonia ecclesiology. The missiology in WCC moved from church-centered mission to missio Dei. The 5th Nairobi affirmed WCC missiology as a wholistic mission. Since 1990 theology of life has influenced on the concept of mission as fullness of life. The theology of social action in WCC started from the concept of responsible society. During 1960’s WCC struggled for social and economic justice and economic. The 5th Nairobi coined the concept of Just, Peaceful and Sustainable Society (JPSS). Then the 6th Vancouver (1983) developed the concept of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC). Under the strong influence of Neo-liberal economic globalization, the 9th Porto Alegre suggested an “Alternative Globalization addressing People and Earth” (AGAPE).
