Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reveal how the church members' perception of the founding period changed in the 1920s and 1940s through the founding ceremony of the Sorae Church in Songcheon-ri, Daegu-myeon, Jangyeon-gun, Hwanghae-do, which is called the “Cradle of Korean Protestantism.” The founding period of the Sorae Church, which is still debated, is generally divided into 1883, 1884, and 1885, and in recent years, 1883 seems to be solidifying. The concept and standards of “church” and “foundation” vary depending on the argument, but when the founding ceremony was held is an indisputable matter of fact. The 40th anniversary ceremony of Sorae Church was held on August 6, 1925, the 50th anniversary lecture was held on August 17-21, 1934, the 50th anniversary ceremony and the dedication ceremony were held on August 22, 1934, and the 60th anniversary ceremony was held on May 16, 1943. The Sorae Church, which defected to South Korea, claimed that Sorae Church was founded on May 16, 1883, based on the minutes of the meeting, but “May 16” here is the month and day when the 46th Hwanghae Presbytery was held at Sorae Church. Therefore, it is still unknown what date and time it was founded. As a result, Sorae Church recognized its foundation differently as 1885 in 1925, 1884 in 1934, and 1883 in 1943, and the grounds were respectively.
