‘죄수의 딜레마 게임’과 ‘겁쟁이 게임’은 가장 널리 알려진 게임이지만, 이 두 게임의 본질에 대한 오해도 적지 않고 특정 상황에 잘못 적용하는 경우 역시 적지 않다. 본 논문은 2×2 게임에서 죄수의 딜레마와 겁쟁이 게임의 특성을 정의하고, 2×2 게임을 넘어서는 경우 죄수의 딜레마와 겁쟁이 게임이 어떻게 정의될 수 있는지를 논한다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 본 논문은 이 두 게임을 현실에 적용하는 연구가 흔히 범하기 쉬운 오류 및 두 게임에 대한 잘못된 이해를 유형별로 지적한다. 이러한 오류 및 잘못된 이해와 관련한 여러 논의 중에는 다음과 같은 내용도 포함되어 있다. 첫째, ‘집단행동의 문제’는 겁쟁이 게임이나 죄수의 딜레마로만 나타나는 것이 아니라, ‘사슴사냥’ 혹은 여러 다른 종류의 2×2 게임의 혼합형으로 나타날 수 있다. 둘째, 통상의 오해와는 달리 ‘반복된 죄수의 딜레마’는 죄수의 딜레마가 아니며, 모든 참가자가 ‘비협력 전략’을 사용하는 ‘균 형’을 포함하여 수많은 균형이 존재한다. 따라서 반복된 죄수의 딜레마에서 보여줄 수 있는 것은 협력이 “이루어진다”가 아니라 협력이 “논리적으로 가능해진다”라는 점이다.
Abstract
Some Thoughts on Prisoners' Dilemma Game and Chicken Game Jung, Joon Pyo(Youngnam University) Prisoners' Dilemma and Chicken Game are two of the most well-known games. However, there are not a few misunderstandings on these two games. Moreover, misapplying these games to real world situations has not been so uncommon. This paper characterizes the two games in terms of 2×2 games and tries to characterize these beyond 2×2 games. In so doing, it shows the kinds of misunderstandings most common on these two games. Among other things, it shows that the so called collective action problem may manifest itself not only as Chicken Game or Prisoners' Dilemma but also as Stag Hunt or some combination of various games. It also shows that repeating the game in question has its own cost. Contrary to the common misunderstanding, the repeated prisoners' dilemma is no longer a prisoners' dilemma and there are so many equilibria including the one where everyone uses the uncooperative strategy. What one can say safely is not that cooperation is achieved in a repeated prisoners' dilemma, but that cooperation is logically possible in a repeated prisoners' dilemma.
