Abstract
In this article I have introduced several models and assessed their strengths and weaknesses on the free-riding hypothesis in public goods of non-rivalry and non-excludability. The models are a prisoner’s dilemma model with the same utility function between 2 players, a prisoner’s dilemma model with the different utility function between 2 players, a public goods experiment in repetitive prisoner’s dilemma game, and a consumer surplus analysis on public goods. The results of the analysis reveal that the consumer surplus analysis on public goods has the advantage of showing the free-riding hypothesis more vividly than prisoner’s dilemma models after all the realistic premises(different utility function between 2 players, divisibility property in public goods, and varying marginal benefit by the quantity of public goods). Also the consumer surplus analysis on public goods has the merit of being congruent to the weak version of free-riding hypothesis.
