마이클 오욱샷의 마키아벨리 정치과학 비판에 대한 小考

이 논문은 마이클 오욱샷의 마키아벨리 정치과학에 대한 비판에 주목하여 그 적실성을 검토하고자 한다. 특이하게도, 그의 비판은 정치과학의 문제를 검토함에 있어 과학뿐만 아니라 철학, 정치철학, ‘마키아벨리안들’의 문제에 대한 검토를 추가적으로 요구한다. 따라서 이 범주들을 추가로 검토해보았다. 이 검토 후, 이 논문은 마키아벨리의 정치과학, 철학과 정치철학, 그리고 ‘마키아벨리안들’에 대한 비판에 대하여 다음과 같이 주장한다. 첫째, 오욱샷의 마키아벨리 정치과학 비판은 마키아벨리의 주요 정치저술(『군주론』과『리비우스논고』)에 대한 철저하고 충분한 텍스트적 검토를 거치지 못했고, 그에 따라 그의 철학, 과학과 실천 개념의 의미를 정확히 포착하지 못하여 하나의 충분하고 적절한 비판이 되기 어렵다는 점이다. 둘째, 오욱샷이 지적한 마키아벨리 정치철학이(또, 정치과학도 역시) 안고 있는 ‘시민성 결핍’이란 문제는 우리가 많은 마키아벨리의 ‘시민성’ 개념에 대한 논의들과 그의 ‘필요성’(necessity)과 ‘자유’(freedom)에 관한 주장에 주목하면, 그 타당성이 약화된다는 점이다. 끝으로 셋째, 오욱샷의 마키아벨리 정치과학 비판은 마키아벨리 자신에 대한 비판에 초점을 두지 못하여 단지 ‘마키아벨리안들’의 현상에 대한 비판에만 국한되어 일종의 역사적 현상에 대한 비판에만 머물게 되었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relevance of Oakeshott's critique of Machiavelli's political science. Particularly, Oakeshott's critique demands us to additionally examine the meaning of science, philosophy, political philosophy and the problem of the ‘Machiavellians’ among others. So they are examined additionally in this work. After this examination, I argue as follows : First, Oakeshott's critique is flawed in that it misses Machiavelli's meaning of philosophy, practice and science, as a result of its failure to do a thoroughgoing and sufficient examination of Machiavelli's major political texts such as The Prince and the Discourses on Livy. Thus, it falls short of an adequate and sufficient critique of his political science. Second, Oakeshott's critique of the seeming ‘lack of civility’ in Machiavelli's political philosophy, and political science therewith, becomes weak, when one observes Machiavelli's abundant analyses of ‘civility’ phenomena and his view of ‘necessity,’ ‘freedom’ and the interrelationship of these two latter concepts. Third and finally, Oakeshott's critique remains as a critique of the phenomena of ‘Machiavellians,’ for Oakeshott misses a focused critique on Machiavelli himself.
