Abstract

This study examines the evolution of South Korean public perceptions of China from 2007 to 2024 using time-series public opinion data, and identifies the underlying causes of their long-term deterioration. The study emphasizes that the 2016 THAAD dispute was not the starting point of deteriorating perceptions, but rather a turning point that brought pre-existing tensions and distrust to the surface. Three key factors account for this deterioration. First, China’s rise and the intensification of U.S.-China strategic competition have reinforced perceptions of China as a potential strategic threat. Second, repeated expectations and subsequent frustrations regarding China’s role in resolving North Korean issues have accumulated disappointment among the South Korean public. Third, growing emotional distance across political systems, history, and culture has solidified negative perceptions. These three factors have brought South Korean perceptions of China to a point where they cannot be easily improved through short-term events or inter-governmental cooperation alone. This suggests that South Korea’s China policy should be formulated from a long-term perspective, taking into account the persistence of anti-China sentiment.
