Abstract
This study analyzed comments posted by influential political YouTubers in the conservative and progressive camps during the 22nd general election and compared the discourses formed in both camps. This attempt was conducted to empirically examine the cognitive frames of users of political YouTuber channels from the perspective of political fandom, drawing upon recent international research trends, and to illuminate the underlying nature of the political conflicts concealed within. The main findings are as follows. First, based on the top 10 TextRank scores, conservative fan bases were characterized by words referring to politicians and parties from the opposing camp, whereas progressive fan bases were characterized by words referring to politicians and parties from their own camp. Second, according to the results of multidimensional scaling analysis, both fan bases formed clusters of words that criticized the opposing camp’s political forces while reinforcing their own camp’s identity. However, the conservative fan base tended to emphasize appeals to institutions, political procedures, and nationalistic values, whereas the progressive fan base revealed a more ideological and identity-centered framework of confrontation. Third, in the semantic network analysis, both fan bases positively supported figures and parties within their own camps and negatively criticized those in the opposing camp. Yet, while the conservative fan base emphasized political conflict through nation and people, the progressive fan base focused on conflicts among real political actors, such as parties and figures.
