Abstract
Raghuvaṁśa of Kālidāsa is one of the most famous Mahākāvya. It begins with verse ‘vāgarthāiva’. According to the Indian grammatical tradition, this verse is considered as a compounded-word and not two words. It means that this verse is taken as compound. This compound is not described in Pāṇini's four kinds of compounds in the Aṣṭādhyāyī, namely Avyayībhāva, Tatpuruṣa, Bahuvrīhi, Dvandva. Later grammarians categorize this compound as Kevalasamāsa or Supsamāsa, and describes the process of formation through yogavibhāga, the division of rules. The reason why they use this means is that all the compounds used in Vedic and Classical sanskrit are not explained through Pāṇini's rules alone. Pāṇini's rule P. 2.1.4, as a special rule, does explain the compounding of indeclinable and verb through yogavibhāga. So yogavibhāga allows P. 2.1.4 to explain 1) the compounding of declined words and verbs, 2) the compounding of declined noun words and declined noun words.
