Abstract

These days it is quite noticeable that contemporary spiritual culture has been being spread far and wide. I wrote this paper in order to investigate the whole scheme or circumstances in which it has been such as we observe and also to search for the task for Buddhism and for any other possible alternative approach to the situation. As a consequence of this investigation, it has been revealed that it is centered on the New Age Movement and is also accompanied mainly by its related disciplines of Transpersonal Psychology and Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory. The agenda of New Age ranged surprisingly widely from thought and theories through practice and social activism, and up to the Universal Religion and even the New World Order. In the case of Wilber, he was seen making an attempt to somewhat awkwardly launch “the Fourth Turning” of the Wheel of the Dharma, and unexpectedly even a certain origin of influence upon him from background was also detected. Somehow contemporary spiritual culture in its wide sense is thought to be capable of making a valuable contribution to the human society. At the same time, however, due to its rather low average level, simply to proceed with such an ambitious project is thought to be in danger of becoming considerably problematic eventually. Furthermore, Buddhism with its central tenet of No-self(Anātman) is seen rather somewhat not so comfortable in the present spiritual culture in which God and the Universal Religion are thought to be generally aspired after. Their consistent pursuit of the Universal Religion and even the New World Order including the supposed World Government may not actually bring us Utopia, but rather be in a serious danger of falling into an unprecedented state of a totalitarian control of the whole world. Moreover, in this 21st century all over the world we observe the emerging trends of integral or convergent approaches through which diverse thoughts and cultures could be drawn to coalesce one another. Therefore, for Buddhism it may not be quite satisfactory to merely develop Buddhism itself and trying to apply such a tenet as the buddha-nature to the present situation. What is urgently demanded is that one on the one hand engage and communicate actively with the other people and cultures and thus integratively forming oneself afresh imbibing their influence and needed contents, and on the other hand dynamically preserve the uniqueness and individuality of Buddhism through appropriately recreating its own thought and culture through one’s own purified concentration accompanied by insight. Then eventually it may be possible, even forgetting Buddhism itself, to attune the resonating minds of such likeminded people while voluntarily pursuing the truths and devoting to the world, and thus doing whatever befits us in our unpretending action.
