Abstract

This paper began with an interest in how India's oldest religion, Jainism, responds to and transforms this global world. Chapter 2 of this paper introduced the activities of Chitravanu and other Jain Gurus who spread Jaina practice to the West for the first time in Jain history. Among them, the Śvetāmbara's Terāpantha presented the Prekṣā meditation, which was developed over 30 years by combining contemporary Buddhism's Vipassana meditation and Hindu yoga as well as modern scientific approaches. This exemplifies the achievement of a historical task in which religious values are inherited vividly only through transformation. This paper compared the actual practice system of Prekṣā meditation with traditional practice and other religious factors in general, and finally noted the purpose and value of that Prekṣā meditation intended to inherit through transformation. The system of Prekṣā meditation consists of main meditation(8kinds), Prekṣā Yoga(4 kinds) and special meditation(4 kinds). Overall, traditional Jainism meditation is well integrated. Kāyotsarga, Leśyā dhyāna, the meditation of separation and interaction of soul and matter, and so on. Above all, in Prekṣā meditation all meditation is structured with the goal of pure soul's self-awareness, which has always been emphasized in the tradition of Jainism. The significance of this paper is that it introduces the important activities of Jainism Yoga and meditation, which is not well-introduced compared to other religions of the same period.
