Abstract
This thesis focuses on trauma, one of the most serious causes of emotional and psychological suffering, as understood by neuropsychology. Special focus is given to the cognitive mechanisms of Yogacara's ālaya-vijñāna, also known as storehouse consciousness. To this end the sophisticated methodology of Yogacara will be integrated with scientific analysis of neuro-psychology in order to better understand the sources of the operating principles of trauma. A point held in common between Yogacara and neuropsychology is that body and mind are interactive, which is to say body and mind are treated as an integrated unit which cannot be separated. Furthermore, both perspectives agree that it is possible for one to be consciousness of him/herself as the subject of action. In this respect, recent research trends on psychology and emotions, both in Korea and abroad, are briefly introduced. In addition to a neuropsychological understanding of trauma, an analysis of the memory of trauma from the perspective of Yogacara is also considred. Based on the reality of trauma as considered from Yogacara psychology and trauma as understood from a scientific approach, practical methods can be integrated and practiced as an effective means toward self-controled and self-directed healing. While various therapeutic meditation practices already exist, this thesis is meant to progress the healing effects of meditation even further as well as to encourage interest in applied Buddhism as well as add to the discussion of universalizing the practices of Yogacara.
