Abstract
This paper makes an attempt to study how caste discrimination appears in modern Indian society by examining the perception of upper castes against the reservation policy for lower castes. This paper is divided into three main sections. In the second section, the two key arguments of upper caste against reservation policy for lower castes are examined: first, the criteria for quotas should be replaced by economic criteria instead of caste; second, caste quotas are inappropriate for elite Indian institutions in the fields of engineering, medicine, and IT. The third section deals with the background of anti-reservation sentiments of the upper caste. These include the continuance of past caste discrimination perception in Manu, the formation of a collective consciousness of untouchables and the Dalit movement, and the weakening of the caste hierarchy due to the implementation of the government reservation policy. The fourth section analyzes that these backgrounds finally strengthen the sense of superiority of the upper caste, the intrinsic difference from the lower caste, and proprietary claims to privileges and advantages. In conclusion, I argue that the form of caste discrimination in modern Indian society has changed from religious purity and pollution distinction to anti-reservation sentiments. Despite the government’s efforts like legal and institutional measures against caste discrimination after independence, it is estimated that caste discrimination will be difficult to completely disappear as long as caste essentialism of the upper caste remains salient.
