Abstract
This study aims to introduce the contents of this literature, which is not well known in Korea and abroad, through the study of Riṣṭasamuccaya(RS) written by Durgadeva, a scholar of the 11th-century Jain Digambara, and secondly, to suggest implications for death preparation education for modern people. The religious and cultural context of identifying death signs in Indian tradition is revealed in Chapter Ⅱ. The three-stage approach to dying - identifying the signs of death, determining the exact time of death, practising practices to prolong death, and finally practising death yoga when death can no longer be prolonged - reveals a tradition of self-determined well-dying compared to contemporary approaches to dying. A vast body of knowledge on recognizing the signs of death appears in the RS as well as in various other texts, indicating that Indians have an open-minded attitude toward end-of-life. It can also be argued that identifying the signs of death is a traditional version of the modern 'end-of-life trajectory'. Chapter III provides an overview of Durgadeva and the RS, and Chapter IV introduces the RS's death signs in their entirety and compares and analyzes them with the death signs in the YŚ of the 12th-century white monk Hemachandra. Durgadeva's reference in RS 13-15 to the tradition of sallekhanā, the practice of fasting at the end of life, incorporates the identification of the signs of death into the tradition of Jain asceticism, stating that a practitioner of sallekhanā can recognize the signs of death and prepare himself for death.
