Abstract

Using the 27 steel items' Revealed Comparative Advantage(RCA), the changes in steel industry competitiveness in Korea, China and Japan are analyzed. The chinese steel production and consumption have increased rapidly since 1996. While the growth of korean steel production and consumption has been relatively small, the japanese steel companies production maintains almost same quantity but the consumption has decreased. The share of exports of these three northeast asian countries in the world were 19%, that of imports were 14.3% in 2003. The analysis by RCA reveals that korean comparative advantage has been in the sector of flat products, and Japan shows comparative advantage specialized to ingot and semis, and high tubes on the whole. On the other hand, China is showing relatively high competitive advantage on ingot and semis, forgings and casting, low tubes and so on. The dynamic analysis of steel industry competitiveness from 1997 to 2003 indicates that korean competitiveness has improved in the sector of flat products such as hot and cold rolled plates and sheets. Japan tends to be stable with a small change of the items in competitiveness. China, however, puts the sector of ingot and semis, hot rolles plate and deformed reinforcing bars into competitive advantage but it keeps the sector of plat products in competitive disadvantage.
