본 연구는 한국어 관형사 ‘무슨’의 비전형적 용법을 담화표지 관점에서 기술·설명한다. 먼저 담화표지의 핵심 기준을 ‘생략 가능성’으로 삼아 사전 풀이와 실제 용례를 대조하여 ‘무슨’의 용법을 정밀하게 분류 하고, 담화표지 ‘무슨’의 기능을 (i) 어림지칭, (ii) 평가절하/주장 완화 기능으로 나누어 의미적 확장 양상을 살폈다. 한편 ‘무슨’이 문법화 과정 을 거치면서 관형사로서의 통사적 의존성이 약화되어 후행 명사와의 결 속이 느슨해지고 단독 실현도 가능해지는데, 이 과정이 의미적 확장보다 는 좀 더 느리게 진행되는 것으로 풀이하였다. 이에 따라 의미적 확장이 일어나던 시기에 존재하지 않았던 ‘뭔’은 ‘무슨’의 구어적 표현이지만 담 화표지로 문법화되지 못한 반면, ‘뭐’는 ‘무엇’을 대신하여 담화표지로 문 법화된 것으로 풀이하였다.
Abstract
This study describes and accounts for the non-canonical uses of the Korean attributive interrogative museun (‘what/which’) from the perspective of discourse markers. Adopting “deletability” as a core diagnostic for discourse-markerhood, we contrast dictionary definitions with attested data to offer a fine-grained classification of museun and trace its semantic expansion. As a discourse marker, museun serves (i) an approximative-reference function and (ii) an underestimation/stance-mitigation function, thereby modulating the strength of the speaker’s commitment. We further argue that, in the course of grammaticalization, the syntactic dependency of museun as an attributive modifier weakens: its bonding with a following noun becomes loose and even standalone occurrences are licensed. This syntactic attenuation proceeds more slowly than the semantic extension. Consequently, although mwon (the colloquial form corresponding to museun) existed as a spoken variant, it did not undergo grammaticalization as a discourse marker because it was absent during the crucial phase of semantic expansion; by contrast, mwo (the colloquial counterpart of mueot ‘what’) did grammaticalize as a discourse marker. The analysis highlights a rare pathway whereby an attributive modifier develops into a discourse marker, contributing both descriptive and theoretical implications for Korean pragmatic/grammaticalization studies.
