초록

This thesis surveys Judas Iscariot's motive of betrayal and suicide process shown in the five Korean novels. The writers describe Judas's betrayal based on the narrative of the Bible, however, they clothe the narrative differently depending on their different points of view. Jesus Christ's death was not caused by Judas's betrayal but by the incarnation predestined in God's master plan, in which Jesus came to the earth to carry man's sin on his back. But it seems the writers do not understand the Bible in a redemptive context, but construe it as a historial event. In Kim Hyung-Sik's short story titled “Judas Iscariot,” Judas is portrayed as a person who betrays Jesus because of greed for money. In Judas's Declaration of Conscience, written by Cho Gi-Tak, Judas commits suicide due to his conscience and the writer feels pity for his choice. The Truth of Judas Iscariot, written by Kim Sung-Jin, expresses man's free will and fatal determinism instead of God's predestined purpose shown in the Bible. On the other hand, “Ageldama,” written by Park Sang-Ryung, described Judas as a man who disobeyed Christ. Judas argues Jesus betrayed him and insists on both being betrayers. “The Testimony about Judas Iscariot,” written by Paek Do-Gi, expressed paradoxical irony that if Judas had watched Jesus' death on the Cross in Golgotha, he would have realized man's weakness and limitation and that Jesus is the real Messiah. The author tells us that Jesus could save even Judas in his holy love. In these novels, Judas is described as a person who did not experience God's righteousness. As Judas did not acknowledge Jesus as Messiah but chose suicide, he symbolizes the deepest despair of human being. Therefore, the writers of five novels did not fully express Judas in the perspective of salvation.
